According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, the state has awarded driver’s licenses to over a million illegal aliens. The state has been issuing licenses to illegal immigrants since 2015 when Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 60 into law.

The Democrat Assemblyman who wrote the bill, Luis Alejo, said the law is working as designed. "Immigrants are getting tested, licensed and insured and this is making our roads safer for everyone," said Alejo, now a Monterey County supervisor, in a statement to the Sacramento Bee. "Today, we see the law working the way it was intended to and has dramatically improved the lives of a million immigrants and their families."

According to Fox News, the licenses have a “visible distinguishing feature and cannot be used for certain federal purposes” such as granting access to some federal areas. Also, the illegals are not eligible to vote and are not registered to vote. Under Federal law, citizens may register to vote when they receive a driver’s license.

California is not the only state that gives illegal aliens driver’s licenses. Eleven other states plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico provide licenses to illegals. All that illegals have to do to get the licenses is provide “a foreign birth certificate, a foreign passport, or a consular card and evidence of current residency in the state."

Supporters of the laws say the licenses make the roads safer and provide illegal immigrants with greater access to jobs.

Opponents say the licenses provide accommodation to illegals and encourages them to stay or come to a state. They also say the policy makes it easier for criminal illegals to commit fraud and could weaken national security. Finally, opponents claim that the licenses for illegals will help enable them to travel across the country.
